For sheer catharsis, In America beats every movie I’ve seen since “The Sweet Hereafter” years ago. Like that movie, it deals with the aftermath of the death of a child; unlike that movie, it comes down (after remarkable agony) on the side of a loving family as the only thing that can heal us.

The Sullivans, a young couple with two adorable daughters, hobble illegally into the U.S., involving to Novel York. In theory this is to back Da open his acting career; in reality, it is an attempt to sprint from the dusky memories of young son Frankie, recently died at 5 of a brain tumor.

The performances are all, all sparkling. Samantha Morton, her hair shorn like a penitent nun’s, gives a blooming performance driven by the despair in her eyes. The real-world sisters Sara and Emma Bolger seem completely transparent; they leave the impression they are not acting at all, but really living the loss of their beloved brother. The African actor Djimon Hounsou looms like a sunless but worthy diety over the dejected family, alternatively reflecting their damage and offering them solace.

The ending will surprise you - I won’t give it away here - but it is a sweet resolution. The film seems to have a basis in truth, as it is written by director Jim Sheridan and his two daughters, and dedicated at the destroy to the memory of Frankie Sheridan (who, as it happens, was Jim Sheridan’s brother rather than his son) .

Jim Sheridan’s IN AMERICA, though you may not realize it when you study it, is a chronicle about wishes, dreams, well-behaved defeating unpleasant, families growing stronger, care for outlasting all adversity and America as the land of opportunity. It’s a exquisite film, touching without being too cute.

One thing you must realize throughout the film, when it takes turns toward optimism when other films would grow darker, is that the account is told through the eyes of Christie, the 10-year-old daughter of an Irish immigrant family recently relocated to Recent York. She narrates the chronicle. She speeds it up and slows it down as she needs to. She talks of her sister Ariel’s fears, of her mother’s strength and of her father’s lost smile. And, most importantly, she puts a distinct streak on each of her proud family’s struggles.

Another director might have taken this same legend and gone in a different, darker direction with it. The elements are there, certainly. The family is dreadful, living in a tenement alongside beggars and drug addicts. Johnny, the girls’ father, is an out-of-work actor who’s uprooted his family to hasten dim memories of his son Frankie, who died. Mateo, the next-door neighbor, and Sarah, the mother, are both faced with life-threatening conditions.

Buy,Download, Or Stream In America! Click Here

But the atmosphere that Sheridan provides us in this film is comforting and light. The city is bewitching. The tenement is both scary and magical, depending upon the epic that Christie is telling the audience. No adult scrape goes unsolved for long, even ones that seem particularly bleak. Throughout these determined twists, the importance of the narrator is key. Blissful endings are vital to a microscopic girl, particularly one who feels so responsible for her hold family. At one point in the fable, for instance, she saves the family from their latest crisis and relates to her father that she’s been the family’s savior for a year.

Though it focuses on her entire family, it’s Christie’s tale. And, while she’s telling it, it’s really intriguing and uplifting.

The acting here is uniformly terrific. Paddy Considine, playing Johnny the father, is a revelation. He’s handsome, strong, a miniature crazy and yet weighed down by wretchedness. Samantha Morton delivers another compelling performance, yet she comes off here as sweeter and more sympathetic than she did in the disappointing MORVERN CALLAR. Djimon Honsou, best known for his work in AMISTAD, is absolutely spectacular as Mateo, the girls’ doomed neighbor. And Sarah and Emma Bolger, real-life sisters playing the girls in the film, manage the difficult task of playing adorable, likable, certain children without coming off as entirely too precious and cute.

The script is terrific, and the direction is quite genuine.

IN AMERICA is honest attractive.

We have multiple Barney videos and this is my daughter’s absolute approved. Not only is this enthralling, but it is also educational. They discuss the different dances that each country does, as well as the food and celebrations that each country has. Being a dancer for my entire life, I was even impressed with this video and its choreography. Tracy, Ben, Barney, BJ, and Baby Bop disappear around the world to experience all the different celebrations. Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro has exiguous ones doing the Samba. Ireland has 4 amazing Irish dancers doing “Riverdance” style dancing. (Everyone that watches it is simply amazed at their footwork!) Then they go to Japan, Africa, and India, all the while showing you their dances. A couple of the songs are the same (”If You’re Elated and you Know It”….”We Like Colors”….), but that’s it! This video is well worth the money! My daughter figured out how to change the DVDs, and I mediate she scratched this one, so it won’t work anymore. I actually came on to win another one and to issue you unbiased how sizable this video is.

As you may know, I was disappointed with Dino Mite Birthday. However, Celebrating Around the World makes up for it with the Imagination focus attend in Barney. Anyway, this modern release (that’s apt, it’s not rehashed) has Ben and Tracy trying to figure out what to do with their party and Barney helps by taking them to all sorts of countries to search for how they celebrate, like Carnaval in Brazil and Saint Patrick’s Day in Ireland. If you and/or your child like Barney, I’d highly recommend this video.

For several years now I have been waiting for Ryan Gosling to fulfill the promise that he exhibited in his revolutionary performance in “The Believer.” Films have arrive and gone and in most of them he has been giving safe performances (”Kill by Numbers”) and problematic ones (”The Notebook”) but always with a sense of who he is as an actor and more importantly how he can spend his talent and his very being to bring the record of the character he is playing alive.

Now with his Dan Dunne, Gosling has finally fulfilled that promise and his Dunne is complicated (a terrific, human, enabling and encouraging high school teacher who is also a cocaine free-baser), sensitive to a fault, sexually aware…basically a talented, educated, addicted man from a loving family that can’t benefit but plunge victim to the baser parts of his nature. He is fair, strong, colorful, loving but can’t encourage but call on the appeal of drugs to douse the raging fire of indecision and self-hatred burning deep inside of him. A fire that director/writers Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden decide not to explicitly snort, though after a Dunne family dinner we are perhaps given some hints into Dan Dunne’s upbringing and politically committed family and therefore the genesis of his addiction.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Half Nelson! Click Here

Fleck and Boden give us expositional information in a very inviting map here particularly the juxtaposition, the flipping befriend and forth of the images between the Dunne family dinner (ex-hippie parents, socially and politically committed brother and his girlfriend… eating, drinking bottles and bottles of wine) and Dunne’s student and friend Drey’s evening home with family: filling miniature plastic bags with cocaine, chatting about her brother in jail…all polite and ordinary. But honestly: which family place is best, which family region is the most comforting for Dan and Drey. This masterful scene goes on for quite a long time and yet Fleck and Boden refuse to comment, refuse to effect one family in a better light than the other.

Besides Gosling, there are a couple of actresses here that deserve special tag. One, in a puny role, though she appeared in both “Six Feet Under” and “Taken,” Tina Holmes as Goslings ex and a extinct addict’s very presence on the hide brings a distinct weight and gravity to this film and of course to her role. Holmes is all sly, afraid smiles, cramped gestures (she does more with an glimpse crinkle than do most with long keen scenes) and an inherent honesty and vulnerability that makes your heart injure. She actually steals her very first scene with Gosling by under acting and the sheer luminosity of her performance.

Secondly, Shareeka Epps as Drey is amazing: she has an feeble soul, and like Holmes a gravity and a basic honesty that sets her apart from others in her family and the other students in this film. As her jailed brothers friend Frank (the safe Anthony Mackie) says of Drey’s friendship with Dunne: “It is ghastly.” But you know what, as presented and implemented in this film…it isn’t. It’s queer, it’s rife with possible problems, it’s doughty for obvious but it’s also the life preserver that saves both Dunne and Drey… it’s their redemption.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Half Nelson! Click Here

Ryan Gosling is, without demand, one of the finest actors of his generation. And I treasure that he is quiet choosing to work in independent, meaningful films. He’s reach a long method from his days as a Mouseketeer. I contend that if “The Believer” had not been dismissed from Academy consideration due to a technicality, he could have made a serious snort for a Best Actor nomination several years ago. Even his work in more veteran films like “The Notebook” and “Kill By Numbers” is mighty and raises the quality of those productions.

“Half Nelson” is a cramped film about staunch people struggling with proper problems. Shareeka Epps stars as Drey in a very straightforward, natural performance. She is growing up with the apprehension that she will become like her brother. He became entrenched in the world of drugs and is currently serving time. There is almost a feeling of inevitability, this is her world and she is incapable of escaping it. Gosling’s Dan, on the other hand, is a semi-functioning drug addict who is her teacher. There is a helplessness to his life as well–he shows very petite interest in actually changing his status. But while he doesn’t feel as if he can place himself, he channels that trouble into saving Drey. And where she can’t change her enjoy circumstances, she makes a connection with Dan.

It’s an engrossing dynamic, one that isn’t often portrayed. And the closeness of their bond can be somewhat unsettling in that they are teacher/student, male/female, adult/child. It’s not an easy relationship to design under ordinary circumstances.

There are no major revelations by the characters in “Half Nelson”. No major confrontations, no climactic scene, no well-organized ending. It’s objective two characters quietly drawn to each other and gaining strength, however fleetingly, from that association. You’re left to ponder what will happen with these characters once the film has ended. You may have a glimmer of hope, but realistically you know it’s going to be an uphill battle. Ultimately the movie’s realism, and lack of an respond, are it’s strongest asset. Life doesn’t arrive in desirable packages for any of us. KGHarris, 12/06.

An American Legend

James Castle was an astounding American artist. He was born deaf in 1899 in rural Idaho and went on to be a major force in the world of American art. Jeffrey Wolf gives us a film about Castle’s life and his creative process and this is an emotional behold at the man who was known as the outlaw artist, His life shows how the spirit can triumph and his life is an inspiration. First Bustle Features brings us a documentary about Castle and we learn of his life by family members, curators, artists, collectors and other members of the deaf community. Castle was a self-taught and prolific artist who remains an enigma in the art world. Born deaf, he did not learn label, read or write in the usual manner. Instead he communicated through his art. He died in 1977 and left late a large body of work which chronicles his growing up on the American frontier.

The film shows us that arose this artist in the middle of nowhere and he, even though handicapped, was able to become a piece of the influences of that frontier. His work fits in with the work of Jasper Johns, Anselm Kieffer and Andy Warhol. Director Jeffrey Wolf explores Castle’s work and looks at how it has grown in the world and he does so by using the voices of surviving family members, art critics both from Idaho and the rest of the world and others who have been inspired by Castle. It is easy to feel the cherish that Wolf poured into this film,

Castle was an untrained artist and therefore is referred to an “outsider because he was not within the artistic mainstream. Because of this Castle was discovered after he died and now it is time to do him into the mainstream world of art where he belongs. His life is spicy and there are many people who remember him and are willing to talk about him. We glance that in the film. The film is a incredible tribute to a man who did not live the design most do yet managed to produce a well-known and determined contribution to the world.

A British gangster turns informer and testifies against a dockful of his mates; as sentence is handed down, the crew behold at him and burst into song — Vera Lynn’s “We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when…” Years later, living a placid exile in a sleepy Spanish village, the informer gets a knock on the door, and two univited guests from his homeland reveal up; one is a jittery soccer hooligan, the other, is, well, white-suited, sunglasses wearing, and almost still — the Angel of Death and his acolyte. Their job is to drive the informer several hundred miles to the French border, where he will be delivered to one of those who vowed revenge and is now free. The get? The informer goes smilingly and willingly. He has known this day would advance, and has spiritually prepared himself for it. As the three roam north, his blissful composure and penchant for cockeny existentialist philosophizing and non-stop chatter begins to crack the facade of the killers who are transporting him; and then everything starts to go very, very depraved. The seek information from is: Has the informer had a conversion experience, or is he a seasoned hustler who has devised a luminous survival gambit?

Stephen Frears, not yet a hack, directed this astonishing example of BritNoir in the mid-’80’s, where it was barely exhibited in the US. The sun-drenched Spanish locations are a special joy, contrasting with the increasingly grim epic, and Frears builds up an admirable amount of tension, leading to explosive bursts of orchestrated violence. This film is genuinely unpredictable, thanks in ample fragment to a literate, Pinter-esque script, the fact that the action is character-generated, and three generations of tremendous UK actors are on hand to utter the crowning glory of the film, its performances, I’ve saved the best for last:

Terence Sign, in his return to the stout cover after a lengthy absence, gives his greatest performance, better even than the much-vaunted “The Limey,” as the smiling martyr. His charm and serenity un-nerve his would-be killers, and starts to un-nerve us as well;

Tim Roth, in his first feature film, as the soccer hooligan driver on his very first hit; when you sight this squirrely apprentice, you know that he is the used link, and scrutinize how Effect zeroes accurate in on him because he sees this too. Glimpse also how Roth delivers a head-butt as though it was a daily occurrence.

The Angel of Death — John Harm as the ancient assassin. He is the voluable, exquisite, sun-tanned Stamp’s polar opposite, he speaks monosyllabically, if at all, will not indulge his captive’s fondness for philosophy, and is seemingly oblivious to all but the job at hand. He has no discernable personality, and Pain, with his dry croak of a inform, sad eyes, pasty white skin that seems to blanch from the Spanish sun, as though he’s not old to daylight, and increasingly filthy white suit, makes him a frightful incarnation, keeping superhuman frosty as a simple assignment falls apart and becomes a bloodbath. Not since Charles Bronson in Once Upon a Time in the West have I seen an actor do more with so few lines and an inexpressive visage.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Hit! Click Here

Extra credit goes to Laura del Sol, obsolete of Carlos Saura’s flamenco musicals, as the graceful hostage the killers are forced to retract on board in one of the film’s escalating place complications: she speaks not a word of English, but she incarnates a will to survive - and an instinctive loathing of the Wound character - that marks her out as a Mediterranean life force, in difference to Hurt’s Northern European death-drive; impartial as Stamp’s equanimity in the face of death begins to drive the Roth character nuts, her Magnani-like sexuality begins to acquire its toll on Hurt’s impassive murderousness.

Anyway, if you want to stare a grand minute sleeper of a movie, decked out with a expansive cast, you could do worse then The Hit. Criterion once again shows improbable acumen in rescuing a large one from oblivion. A spacious addition to the British tradition of off-beat gangster movies, like Win Carter, The Long Proper Friday and Performance.

After reading all the reviews stating how unpleasant the dvd quality of “The Hit” was, I decided to bewitch the vhs. This is easily one of the most unique mob movies ever made, with an outstanding cast and awesome music by Paco De Lucia. Years ahead of its time in terms of style and violence, I can notice how a smart film like this would influence directors like Quentin Tarantino.

The movie begins in London, 1973, where broken-down criminal Willie Parker (Terence Trace) betrays his friends in exchange for immunity from the court. Ten years later, in Spain, Parker is abducted from his calm village by a group of amateurs, who “sell” him to hitman Mr. Braddock (John Wound) and his rookie assistant (Tim Roth) . Braddock and his assistant have been hired by Parker’s ragged “partners-in-crime” to ruin Parker, but the more they talk to Parker, the more puzzled they are. Parker is a totally willing victim who doesn’t even try to rush from them, and throughout the movie he has several opportunities. Braddock and his assistant also consume a aesthetic woman (Laura del Sol) hostage, not realizing the consequences this will have on their recent “assignment”. After getting to know Parker, Mr. Braddock and his assistant initiate to have doubts about killing him, but the violent confrontation at the ruin shows that some characters were hiding their fair feelings about the bleak area.

Terence Heed and John Damage were awesome, as was Tim Roth in his impressive film debut. What sets this apart from other mob movies is that this film focuses on the inner conflict that rages inside hitmen when they survey that their “target” is actually a likable person. It also takes an intelligent belief on death itself. A film this shimmering certainly deserves a Criterion Collection dvd release, but until then I recommend the vhs version.

The Simpsons Movie features edifying animation, a obliging status that moves along very well, colossal gags and awesome voiceovers by the cast. There are so many gags that there’s jog to be jokes in this movie that will amuse unbiased about anyone!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Simpsons Movie! Click Here

The action starts when Lake Springfield is practically destroyed by excessive pollution; and so the town must dapper it up. They do! Unfortunately, however, things don’t finish that way–and there begins the Exact region of this film. Homer (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) decides to pick on a pig for a house pet. When Marge (voiced by Julie Kavner) casually asks Homer what he’s doing with the pig’s “leavings;” Homer takes Marge out aid and shows her his “silo” pudgy of pig “droppings.” Marge isn’t too happy; and eventually Homer realizes he MUST acquire rid of the festering silo. Naturally, where does Homer go to earn rid of the silo? Lake Springfield! Once again the lake is unbelievably atrocious.

Russ Cargill (voiced by Albert Brooks) is in charge of the EPA and he sets out to rectify the scrape. What happens? Springfield is enwrapped by a broad, impenetrable dome–and then wiped off the blueprint. The residents of Springfield are aroused at Homer; and sooner rather than later The Simpsons must soar. They go to Alaska in search of freedom from the infuriated residents of Springfield.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Simpsons Movie! Click Here

Worse yet, Russ Cargill and President Schwarzenegger (voiced by Harry Shearer) hatch a understanding to bomb Springfield so that it will never again pose a scrape. This really raises the stakes.

From here the position can go anywhere. What will Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie do? Will they finish in Alaska where it’s beneficial or will they return to Springfield to try to rescue the people there from being killed by the bomb? Will Homer and Marge’s marriage be tested by all this strife? What will Bart assume of Homer after this all becomes one large mess? No site spoilers here, folks–you’ll fair have to scrutinize the movie to bag out!

The animation couldn’t be better. I was very impressed by the clarity and the sharpness of the images and colors. The voiceovers were outstanding as well. It seems like Matt Groening, director David Silverman and their crew can do no corrupt.

In addition, the DVD comes loaded with a plethora of extras considering this is all on one single DVD. There are several deleted scenes; and there’s a very silly but brief extra entitled “Let’s All Go To The Lobby.” There are two commentaries for you to appreciate if you wish; and there are broad gags all the design through the ending credits.

Overall, The Simpsons Movie is definitely one of the best comedies of 2007. I thoroughly enjoyed every shrimp of it. Fans of The Simpsons will want this in their collections; and even people less familiar with The Simpsons television point to will earn huge entertainment and many jokes here!

In the TV series, what you’ve got is something of a linear main-plot with a lot of sub- and mini-plots interwoven. And those plots revolve around the humor and comedy, kind of like the dwelling revolves around the sex in an x-rated movie-not that I would know, but impartial based on what I’ve heard. Anyway, this movie does not assume this strip cartoon structure, which is actually the kind of material that Matt Groening started off doing. Anybody remember Life Is Hell comics? So with The simpsons movie what you’ve got is the reverse: more of a dominant main linear station, with the comedy revolving around it powerful more than what you’ve got in the TV series. And this makes sense for a feature-length film, otherwise why beget one, upright?

Also, remember the film The Adams Family? A lot of people got caught up on the fact that it seemed choppy. It seemed choppy because they tried to do a strip cartoon format (TAF started off as a strip cartoon) with a full-length feature. It works stunning for something short, like say 30 minutes or under, but can tire and confuse the audience if they catch a solid hour and a half of it, and I assume the makers of this film took that into consideration as they do together a film somewhat more plot-driven than its TV counterpart.

In a nutshell, they had to expressionless things down a small bit in order to work in a anecdote line that was determined enough to hold the audience focused on the movie for the entire time. But there’s a lot that’s silly in this movie, typical Simpson’s stuff, along with one or two things that they probably wouldn’t even assign on prime time. Plus it’s objective frosty to explore a movie and have it be The Simpsons.

The comedy of Mike, Kevin, and Bill is solid as expected. Some of the jokes are the word-for-word dependable same as in the earlier version from Account Films, featuring only Mike Nelson’s comedy track. In this version, however, the delivery of those lines is shared by Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett. Luckily, there is some modern material mixed in that offsets the repeats. If you’ve never seen the previous version, you won’t even peep.

I only had two steady technical issues with this DVD. Firstly, the menu veil ran once and then stopped instead of looping wait on to the begin. This meant that I had to initiate the entire DVD all over again. Secondly, the video was choppy in parts. The audio ran without philosophize, but some parts of the film seemed to be skipping video frames. I am not obvious if this was an assure with all copies of this DVD or if it’s specific to my player.

All in all, it’s savory and amusing, a agreeable lift for any fan of Rifftrax, Mystery Science Theater 3000, or Cinematic Gigantic.

This former dim and white movie was cheaply made but became a Cult Hit shock dismay film that started the Flesh-Eating Zombie movie craze. The dilapidated MST3K crew of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett recall it on with quite a few comical riffs. Some don’t quite hit the state, and the guys miss some choice moments to riff, but that’s always the case with Rifftrax. One of the better ones was, “A Zombie’s Worst enemy, a Clothesline.” The clueless young couple who try to hurry the zombies and the ultra-Angry family man collect lots of attention. Rifftrax does not include aged MST3K things like skits, sets, or the Bots. You never Contemplate the guys in any earn. You simply HEAR them from the beginning to the waste of the movie. Not even an Intro!

I also recommend Rifftrax “House on Stunned Hill.” It’s terrific.

The movie is based on a “piece” of everyone’s life, in some small way, who have ever played football. Does it matter that HS kids get in a strip club and drink till 6:00am ? “NO” Does it matter that Hoss is sitting on a tailgate, drinking Jack like its water … and shooting a shotgun, with the HS Football Field lights on ? “NOOOOO” !!!!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Varsity Blues! Click Here

It is “Rocky” + “Friday Night Lights” + “Rudy” + “Stand By Me” = Varisty Blues.

If you played football, or ever hung out with the guys after a game, or ever LAUGHED at the guys who couldn’t leave HS even after they graduated 9 years ago … Then buy the movie, its worth it, and the soundtrack ROCKS !!!!

When I first saw this film, I hated it. I could not find a single likeable character in the movie: the backup quarterback who couldn’t seem to make up his mind whether to be ambivalent or committed to football; an obsessed, fanatical head coach; shallow, self-absorbed, hedonistic jocks; a whipped cream cheerleader; a little brother with an identity crisis; and moronic football dads wanting to do nothing more than live vicariously through their sons. Outside of a headbanging soundtrack and sensational football action, I was anything but impressed with VARSITY BLUES.

Then I caught the film on cable recently, and watched it. Then I rented it, and watched it again. Perhaps I had been too judgmental my first viewing: VARSITY BLUES was slowly but surely revealing itself to me as a very entertaining movie. I came to appreciate Jonathan “Mox” Moxon (James Van Der Beek), a second string quarterback with aspirations to go to an Ivy League college suddenly thrust into the spotlight of his west Texas town as the new starting signal caller. I came to loathe Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight), the epitome of the abusive, cruel, vindictive, win-at-all-costs head football coach. I came to enjoy the small town “feel” of this film, where high school football players are placed on a pedestal and allowed to run wild. And what can you say about Billy Bob (Ron Lester) and Tweeder (Scott Caan), other than these two raunchy characters flavor this movie whenever they appear like onions in Texas chili?

Setting aside a hopelessly unrealistic player revolt (Where were the other coaches to take over when Kilmer left?), director Brian Robbins furnishes fast-moving, high-octane football scenes guaranteed to make those of us who have played the game (and still love it) want to strap on the pads again. VARSITY BLUES is less than perfect, like a six-pack of warm beer, but still satisfying to the last drop.

It is so unfair of Universal to set fans of NE in this situation. I was gutted when watching the second season of this series on DVD only to realise that it was fleshy of pappy generic music where Exact music should have been. It didn’t waste the episodes in ask, it objective took some of the soul away from them. While it is gargantuan that this exquisite series is finally being released on DVD, I can’t assist but feel that, without all the amazing music, it is somewhat the poorer. So many memorable and fascinating scenes are made all the more so by the perfectly-chosen music that accompanies them, so it is dusky to mediate that we are being made to determine between a compromised DVD version of NE on one hand, or no NE at all apart from the ragged videotapes and reruns on the other. So my plea goes out to whoever is responsible for these things - I will pay whatever it costs, an unreasonable amount if well-known, to have these episodes with all the recent music, and I am clear that many other fans of Northern Exposure feel the same.

This is a fair film, well directed by Hugh Hudson in his theatrical film debut. It features the accurate life fable of two Olympic runners, Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson) and Harold Abrahams (Ben Faulty), who ran for Ample Britain in the 1924 Olympic Games and brought home the Gold.

The film tells the myth of these two individuals, who are as different from each other as different can be, and explores their personal drive and reasons for running. Eric Liddell is a trusty Scot and a fervid Presbyterian (He would attach John Knox to shame!) . The son of a missionary and himself a missionary by avocation, he runs because “God made him expeditiously for a reason”. His running is a reconciliation of his faith and his passion, which is running. He runs for the glory of God. His faith always remains constant and pre-eminent in his life. His devotion to it causes some controversy during the Olympics, as a consequence of the stance he takes when he discovers that the preliminary mete for the 200 metre bustle would be held on a Sunday. Liddell simply refuses to accelerate on the Sabbath! Luckily for Tall Britain, Lord Andrew Lindsay (Nigel Havers), a gentleman and fellow competitor, graciously steps in and, as he had already won a gold medal in the hurdles, gives him his area in the 400 metre hurry, which would assume station on a Thursday. This would never happen today in the dog eat dog world of competitive sports, great less in the Olympics of today!

Harold Abrahams is completely different. A secular Jew and Cambridge scholar, he studies in the bastion of upper crust British society, struggling to fit in but always remaining the proverbial outsider. He has a passion for running that is motivated by his passion for winning. In his world, God has nothing to do with it. Winning is merely an affirmation of himself in a world that he believes thinks less of him because he is a Jew. Consequently, his desire to glean is superceded only by his dismay of losing. When two Cambridge dons, the Master of Trinity, played by the unhurried John Gielgud, along with the Master of Caius, meet with Abrahams, they are concerned that his hiring of a personal professional trainer, Sam Mussabini (Ian Holm), to befriend him with his running is not quite in keeping with the amateur tradition of the Cambridge gentleman. Implicit in their criticism is an undercurrent of anti-Semitism, one to which Abrahams does not pick proper. It is that moment that defines what makes Abrahams urge.

This is ultimately a tale about faith. With Liddell, it is about his faith in God. With Abrahams, it is about his faith in himself. Both were propelled to Olympic glory by it. It is a fable sublimely told, though a small lifeless at times. It is not an action type of sports movie. It speaks gently of a time long passed, when the Olympics was truly the bastion of amateurs. It is incredible to scrutinize track events of the Olympics of 1924 depicted in all their simplicity…no flash, no glitz, no gimmicks. The runners ran on dirt tracks. They all carried spades in which to dig their footholds for their starting “blocks”, something that surprised me. This attention to detail permeates the entire film, and its evocation of a bygone era makes the film linger in one’s memory long after it has ended.

Ian Charleson gives a valuable performances as Eric Liddell, infusing him with a gentleness and purity of spirit that is compelling, while Ben Faulty plays Harold Abrahams with an intensity and singularity of purpose that is riveting. Their stellar performances, as well as those given by the great supporting cast, coupled with dazzling cinematography and the genuine direction of Hugh Hudson, gain this film salubrious of its 1981 Academy Award for Best Record. The pleasing and soaring, synthesized music of Vangelis also won an Academy Award and went on to become a number one hit in the pop charts in 1982.

The athletes of the British running team who went with hope in their hearts and wings in their heels in the VIII Olympiad in Paris in 1924 is the focus of this movie, but there’s also the dynamics of what it means to be English, and the reconciliation of one’s soul and religious convictions in the Fresh Age. Three of them are students from Cambridge. There is the mild and soft-spoken Aubrey Montague, Lord Andrew Lindsey, and Harold Abrahams. As the head of Caius (pronounced Keys) College tells them when they first back in 1919, they are the first post-war generation who have inherited the dreams of a generation that perished on the fields of France, a generation embodying “goodness, zeal,…and colorful promise.”

The two main athletes here are a inequity from one another. One is Harold Abrahams, a Jew who wants to be seen as English as the fellow next to him. Hence his enrolling in all these clubs and fraternities in Caius College, from track, tennis, and even the Gilbert and Sullivan glee club-he wants to enter the Christian, Anglo-Saxon corridors of power, i.e. the former school tie. He succeeds in getting to an English girl in the develop of Sybil Gordon, who doesn’t mind he’s Jewish. He can race like the wind, and nothing would fulfill his dream of being English more than winning so he’ll be common, but he’s so driven, hinging so worthy of his success on his winning, that he acts like its his occupy funeral when he loses in a rush. He engages Sam Mussabini, a private and professional coach, which is contrary to the implied rules of Cambridge. When the heads of Trinity House and Caius House, (Sir John Gielgud and Lindsay Anderson) exercise their prep-school mentality to chastise him, saying Cambridge prided itself on the amateur attitude as opposed to the professional, and an esprit de Corps as opposed to individual glory, Abrahams tells them off.

Scottish Eric Liddle, on the other hand, is a missionary born in China, who plans to return there to continue God’s work, but the “muscular Christian” runs like a wild animal. With religion as a metaphor, he compares faith to running a run, describing the energy of the soul, the elation of breaking that tape, but he says that the power comes from within. “If you commit yourself to the appreciate of Jesus Christ-that is how you salvage a straight accelerate.” To pick up is to honour God, and the gift he was given. His faith is tested twice, between the missionary work and running, and his respect for God and running on the Sabbath. He’s clearly more Victorian, but also a Scot, choosing God over country instead of the more secular British. But will his faith wait on him triumph over favoured Americans Jackson Scholz and Charles Paddock?

The slow-mo shots of the running athletes, the looks of elation, the disappointment of those who didn’t qualify shows the various reactions of the soul. And Current Age composer Vangelis Pathaniossou made his tag with his derive, during the races and the scenes of Americans training, but especially the curious main theme that opens and closes the movie as the athletes are running along the ocean shore. This sequence itself is repeated twice, once where we know nothing about these athletes on who the cameras pan in on, but by the raze, when the camera does its work, we know these people better, and they have names, as the credits identify actor and role. This was an early role for Nicholas Farrell (Montague), who was Horatio in Branagh’s Hamlet. But Ben Scandalous as the driven Abrahams, Ian Charleson as the debonair blond Christian Liddell, Nigel Havers as Lindsay, Ian Holm (Mussabini), and Alice Krige (Sybil) do well. And yes, the Head Porter at Caius College is Richard Griffiths, best known as Harry Potter’s Uncle Vernon, and quite thinner too.

As the winner of four Oscars including Best Report, Chariots Of Fire remains an unpretentious film where the enact line is a accurate, spiritual, and of course a physical goal, and how one must be honest to oneself to come that goal.
